Course Syllabus
RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster™ theory is an advanced course that builds on the knowledge gained at the theory RYA Day Skipper level. It is aimed at sailors and motor boaters who are looking to undertake more complex passages perhaps offshore or at night. It will take your theory knowledge to the standard required for the Yachtmaster™ Coastal and Yachtmaster™ Offshore practical course.
Pre-Course Experience+
Knowledge to Day Skipper Shorebased standard. Practical sailing experience is desirable, as this provides invaluable context to the subjects you’re learning.
Assumed Knowledge+
A basic knowledge of navigation, tides, meteorology and safety theory.
Student Instructor Ratio+
You will be assigned a dedicated RYA Yachtmaster Instructor to answer your questions.

The ExamThere are four exams for the RYA Coastal / Yachtmaster™ Skipper:
IRPCS Assessment assesses candidates on their theoretical knowledge and understanding of the International Rules for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea.
Chartwork Assessment evaluates a candidate's proficiency in practical navigation skills and the ability to apply chartwork techniques. This may cover topics such as Plotting Courses, Position Fixing, Tidal Calculations and Pilotage and Passage Planning.
Passage Making - Section A
Passage Making - Section B
Prior to starting the exams candidates will need to undertake the Passage Making Pre-Assessment Appraisal. This is NOT a timed examination and allows the candidate to pre-prepare all the information required to undertake the two Passage Making Exams. These two exams will cover the complete syllabus.
All exams are undertaken remotely are closed booked. You will need to refer to your RYA Almanac and Charts 3 & 4. Once started exams are timed by the system and must be completed once started. Individual exams do not need to completed on the same day.
